Project overview : Characterisation of porous inorganic films, hydrophilic and hydrophobic polymer films by Vapour Sorption Ellipsometry.

Anthony is a doctoral student in the Department of Chemical Engineering with a background in Physics and Physical Chemistry. He is studying optical and physical property changes of multifunctional thin films due to environmental exposure. These properties are mainly studied using a state-of-the-art Vapour Sorption Ellipsometer, where humidity or organic vapours can be precisely controlled using mass flow controllers in an environmental chamber. The material categories under investigation include porous inorganic films, hydrophilic and hydrophobic polymer films, and surface modified hydrophobic polymer films by hydrophilic surfactants. Understanding what happens to thin films or coatings at different environmental conditions is of great importance in manufacturing and processing industries, particularly in pharmaceuticals and electronics.
